An address within the territory

The Château Meyre vineyard in the Médoc

Our estate is at 16 Route de Castelnau, 33480 Avensan, in the Gironde. The vineyard covers 12 hectares split between Haut-Médoc and Margaux. That gives a precise answer to anyone searching for an organic vineyard in the Médoc: one property, two appellations and a place where you are welcomed.

The plots lie on Quaternary gravels, sands, silts and veins of clay. The estate limited chemical inputs from the 1980s, then converted the whole vineyard to organic farming in 2008. Ecocert certification is one of the documented environmental credentials.

Two wines, two readings

Château Meyre

This AOC Haut-Médoc wine is mostly Merlot, completed by Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The 2018, 2019 and 2020 vintages each have a product sheet in the range we sell.

Gallen de Château Meyre

From the AOC Margaux, Gallen grows on deep Quaternary gravels. Its blend is 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2018, 2019 and 2020 vintages are also presented.

This information lets you compare the two expressions of the estate without us inventing an aromatic profile. It also gives a common thread to the tasting, from the origin of the plots to the blend.

From grape to ageing

How are the vineyard's wines made?

In the cellar, the process we follow begins with maceration and fermentation. Controlling temperatures goes hand in hand with this transformation. Pressing and fining come before ageing, where the choice of barrels is a decision made for each wine.

The Gallen cork among several vintages is a reminder that winemaking is also followed over time. Discovering the vineyard then becomes concrete: it links the soil, the grape varieties, the stages in the cellar and the bottles presented at the tasting.

Coming to Avensan

Visiting a vineyard in the Médoc by reservation

Three tours let you discover the estate. The Discovery Tour lasts one hour and goes from the vineyard to the cellar before the tasting. The Gourmet Tour also lasts one hour and adds a board of charcuterie and cheeses with a confit made from the estate's grapes. Vineyard by Bike is a self-guided two-hour route, with a guided tasting when you return. The estate holds the Accueil Vélo label.

If you are looking for where to taste wine in the Médoc, please note that we welcome you in Avensan and that visits must be booked in advance. No prices are published. A written request lets you settle the tour, the date you would like, the number of guests and the price of a vineyard visit in the Médoc.

The four-star hotel of nine rooms is on the same estate. Being both a hotel and a vineyard means you can sleep among the vines, with your room as part of the wine experience rather than a stop away from it.

Practical questions

Choosing and visiting a vineyard in the Médoc

The question of which vineyard to visit in the Médoc calls for concrete answers on location, tasting and price. To find out how long a vineyard visit takes, also compare the three tours described below.

Can I buy the wines at the château without taking a tour?

Buying direct at the château and visiting are two separate things. Château Meyre sells its wines at the estate and through an online shop run by a partner. Tours must be reserved in advance. If you are travelling only to buy, please contact reception first to check how we can welcome you and whether we are available when you wish to come.

Where can I taste wine in the Médoc?

Tastings take place at the estate, at 16 Route de Castelnau, 33480 Avensan. Depending on the tour you choose, you taste Château Meyre AOC Haut-Médoc, Gallen de Château Meyre AOC Margaux and the "Meyre" sauvignon blanc. Reception confirms availability when you book.

How can I find out the price before visiting the vineyard?

Prices are not published for our three tours. Please contact reception to get the price of the one-hour Discovery Tour or Gourmet Tour, or of the two-hour Vineyard by Bike. That way you have confirmed information before you travel.

Which tour length should I choose to discover the estate?

It depends on the tour. Allow one hour for the Discovery Tour and for the Gourmet Tour, and two hours for Vineyard by Bike. Each one ends with a tasting, with a more guided, more gourmet or more independent approach depending on your choice.
